What we do

We specialize in rare and unique research materials used by researchers and scholars to understand the past and its relationship to the present. We collect materials that document the university, including student life, rural life, science and technology, and much more. We make exhibits, websites, and collections for anyone to explore and learn from.

University Archives

We serve as the primary repository for the historical records of the university. We collect, describe, preserve and exhibit university records that contain historical, administrative, legal, or fiscal value.  We welcome exhibition proposals from the campus community that highlight the experiences, achievements, and memories of people and organizations that make up Iowa State University.

Special Collections

We collect and care for research materials with rare or unique qualities. Our collection includes more than 50,000 rare books, from early European printing to current day; personal and family papers; and organizational records from individuals and organizations from Iowa, across the U.S. Midwest, and within the United States.
