Pick From Shelf Service

Pick from Shelf is a service that will pull materials from Iowa State Libraries’ shelves and place them on hold for you at one of three University Library locations: Parks Library, Design Reading Room, Veterinary Medicine Library. Items are pulled Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

How do I place a Pick From Shelf Request?

  • Search Quick Search for the item you want
  • Click on the Sign in link in the yellow bar (appearing above search results)
  • Select one Sign in option and enter the requested information
  • Click on the title of the item you want delivered
  • Click Request, complete any other information as appropriate, and click Submit

Pickup at Parks:

Item from Parks/Media:

  • Submit by 12:00 pm (Noon): available at 2:30 pm same business day
  • Submit after 12:00 pm (Noon) and by 8:00 pm: available at 10:00 pm same business day

Item from Storage:

  • Submit by 11:00 am: available at 3:30 pm same business day

Item from Veterinary Medicine

  • Submit by 1:00 pm: available after 12:00 pm (Noon) the next business day.

You will receive an email with the subject “ISU Library – Item Being Held” when your requested item is available for checkout.

  • Submit by 12:00 pm (Noon): available at 2:30 pm same business day

Item from Parks/Media:

  • Submit by 12:00 pm (Noon): available at 2:30 pm same business day
  • Submit after 12:00 pm (Noon): available at 2:30 pm next business day

Item from Storage:

  • Submit by 11:00 am: available at 2:30 pm next business day

Item from Veterinary Medicine:

  • Submit by 1:00 pm: available at 2:30 pm next business day

  • Submit by 8:00 am: available after 4:00 pm next business day

How many days will the item remain on the hold shelf?

Items will stay on the hold shelf for 10 days.

Can I use Pick from Shelf to request items on Course Reserve?

No, Course Reserve items may not be requested using Pick from Shelf.

How many items can I request?

Patrons can request up to 10 items (exceptions apply for items with multiple barcodes).  The 10-item limit includes recall/hold requests.  

Requested item didn’t arrive

If your requested item didn’t arrive at the pickup location within the time frames listed above, the following could apply:

  • Item is Checked out
  • Inclement weather – In case of snow or other inclement weather, library staff may not be able to make deliveries to or from the Design Reading Room, Veterinary Medicine Library, or the Library storage building. Patrons will be sent email notification if delivery is unavailable due to weather.
  • Item is missing – Library staff will notify patrons if their requested items are not found.
