Welcome from the dean of library services

Aug 09, 2022

New semesters spark excitement and present new opportunities for students, staff, and faculty.

Library faculty and staff are committed to working with you to make this a successful and productive year by providing excellent resources, services, technology, and spaces. We spent our summer working on ways to improve your library experience.

Connect with us in the library.

OER funding. As identified in the university’s 2022-31 strategic plan, the first goal is to be the most student-centric leading research university. Undergraduate students will see enhanced affordability for course content through Open Educational Resources and immediate access materials. Students will save money and benefit from quality, low- or no-cost class materials. The adoption and creation of OER is identified as a high-priority initiative, and the university is investing $300,000 to jump-start this effort. Experts in the library are eager to expand these efforts and help instructors create and adopt OERs for the classroom.

Course-related instruction. Librarians in Research and Instruction Services and Special Collections and University Archives welcome classes and the opportunity to collaborate. Librarians are eager to meet with classes to provide information on discipline-specific research resources and search techniques.

More power. Many students come to Parks with more than one device, and there’s a good chance something will need to be charged. Seventy-five percent of the seats in Parks have access to power, and we’re adding more outlets along with updated furniture.

Tech Lending. New camcorders and microphones are now available for checkout. Tech Lending is constantly adding items for students to borrow, including laptops, tablets, graphing calculators, and chargers.

Wayfinding. We are working on new signage to help you get to where you need to go in Parks Library because we want our spaces and services to be easily discovered.

Website redesign. There will be opportunities to give feedback in the coming months that will help us improve our website. Sign up to be notified of this chance to share your thoughts.

Our experts are ready to facilitate research pursuits in all corners of campus. For information, visit the Find Your Librarian guide, or contact us during Live Chat hours using the red tab on each page of our website.

Bookends Café will reopen when classes resume on Aug. 22 and the IT Solution Center is here if you need their assistance. Both are conveniently located on the first floor.

On behalf of the faculty and staff at the Iowa State University Library, we look forward to seeing you in the library.
