Special Collections & University Archives news: Archives - What they are and how to use them.
Special Collections and University Archives staff created a guide to understanding, finding, and using archives and archival materials: "Archives - What They Are and How to Use Them."
The guide explains what archives are, why everything isn't online, and what to expect when visiting an archives. A comprehensive list of searchable online finding aids and digital items is provided for states, territories, national archives around the world, and some topical databases. Pages on caring for collections and transferring materials provide help on identifying historical and modern AV and photographic formats, preservation of digital and physical items, and legal and policy considerations for donations and transfers.
The guide is recommended as a resource for classes who will be visiting the Iowa State University Special Collections and University Archives, students who need to conduct archival research for a class project or dissertation, those who want suggested resources for understanding primary sources, and researchers who need help finding materials at archives elsewhere.
Although this isn't a guide to using the Iowa State University Special Collections and University Archives, the Iowa State archivists are happy to answer questions about the guide, using our collections, or archival research in general. Contact us at email@example.com or visit our website.?
