Open Access Publishing
Researchers all over the globe tap into the wealth of free and open access information housed in the Iowa State University Digital Repository. Established in 2012, it has grown to be one of the largest Digital Commons-based repositories in the world. As of April 8, 2017, 10-million items have been downloaded.
There are over 62,900 items in the repository. Faculty, students and staff from all seven colleges on the Iowa State campus have contributed items. The following departments boast the highest participation: Economics (ALS/LAS), Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Chemistry, University Library, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ALS/ENG), Entomology, Natural Resource Ecology and Management and World Languages and Cultures.
Providing open access to research is important ? particularly when funding comes from federal sources ? and institutional repositories have become more and more prevalent. The Vice President for Research Office has supported the ISUDR from its inception as an important tool for all scholars.
Access to completed research placed in the repository is freely available, and authors don?t have to be concerned with publishing fees that might otherwise be cost prohibitive. As soon as scholarship is uploaded to the repository, it is there for discovery. Industry professionals and researchers everywhere are then able to search and locate scholarship to reference and cite in their own pursuits. As is evidenced by the millions of downloads, research placed in the ISUDR is being used on a global scale.
