In spring 2025, the University Library Cyclone Support Central Team received the Thomas B. Thielen Award, one of the highest honors given by Iowa State University’s Division of Student Affairs.

Named for the longtime dean of students, the award recognizes a faculty or staff member outside the division who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to student success. The team, nominated by Katy Cran, strategic communications advisor for the Division of Student Affairs, was selected from more than 40 individuals and teams across campus.

“We appreciate the growing partnerships with student support units from across campus in bringing Cyclone Support Central to life,” said Hilary Seo, dean of the University Library. “We’re proud of the hard work and creativity the Cyclone Support Central Team puts into supporting our students daily, and are fortunate to have such a dedicated group. Our students are indeed the beneficiaries.”

Among the team members recognized were Seo, Melea Licht, communications manager, Brent Swanson, business manager, Jenni Diaz, library outreach specialist, Haylee Sheppard, graphic designer, Justin Nolting, building manager, and Kurt Garretson, building services specialist.

A plaque commemorating the award is displayed at the entrance of Cyclone Support Central, honoring the team’s continued commitment to student wellbeing.

The University Library opened Cyclone Support Central in early 2025 in partnership with the Division of Student Affairs. The student-centered drop-in space, tucked into room 140 Parks Library, is designed to offer accessible, welcoming support to all students, whether they’re seeking resources, guidance, or simply a moment to catch their breath.

Programming continues to evolve in response to student feedback, and the space has become a campus-wide point of connection between departments, student services, and wellbeing initiatives.

As the new academic year approaches, the team is eager to welcome students back into the space, with new partnerships, familiar faces, and continued care at the heart of every offering.
