Iowa State University Library launches open access digital press
The Iowa State University Library offers a new service for Open Access publishing. The Iowa State University Digital Press supports the land-grant mission to share knowledge beyond campus borders and the University Library’s Open Initiatives strategic priority.
The press gives Iowa State faculty, staff, and students new opportunities to share research and facilitate learning, and publish journals, conference proceedings, books, and textbooks. These publications are made available to readers for free, which eliminates financial barriers to readership and facilitates global access to research outcomes.
The Digital Press uses the open
-source Janeway publishing platform for journals and conference proceedings. Designed, built, and maintained by the Centre for Technology and Publishing at Birkbeck, University of London, Janeway provides flexible workflows for managing submissions, editorial and peer review, copyedits, production, and publication.
Textbook publishing is managed through the Pressbooks platform, which is built on the Wordpress blogging platform. Authors can write, edit, and layout textbooks and provide free access to students. Information about publishing open textbooks and other educational resources, including the Miller Open Education Mini-Grant, can be found at Iowa State University’s Open Educational Resources website.
Publications currently available through the Digital Press include the Iowa State University Animal Industry Reports, the International Textile and Apparel Association Annual Conference Proceedings, theJournal of Critical Thought and Praxis, The OER Starter Kit, Sterkiana, the U.S. Latino/a Studies Program 25 Year Anniversary Digital Proceedings. The Iowa State University Library provides basic publishing services at no cost. The press is committed to increasing the diversity of voices that are represented in the scholarly record and welcomes journals, conferences, and edited volumes that publish work from students, emerging scholars, authors from underrepresented groups, in languages other than English, and voices from outside academia.
