Digital Collection of Stephens Auditorium is now available.
Stephens Auditorium celebrates its 50th anniversary over the course of the 2018-2019 concert season. A selection of materials documenting the Iowa State Center and Stephens Auditorium is now available online through Iowa State University Library’s Digital Collections. A majority of the digital collection focuses on Stephens Auditorium, the first building constructed at the Iowa State Center. The digital collection contains early images including the auditorium under construction, images after it was completed, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (the auditorium’s opening performance). The digital collection reflects the design and construction of the building, in addition to materials giving background on the fundraising efforts and vision for the Iowa State Center.
As envisioned by then ISU President James Hilton, the Iowa State Center was built as an educational, cultural, and athletic complex. Stephens Auditorium was completed in 1969. C. Y. Stephens Auditorium is named after one of its major benefactors, Iowa State alum Clifford Y. Stephens (1902-1963).
