Interview portion:

TZB:  And what about chemistry attracted you?

MC:   I think it was just that it was sort of fun little explanations.  I mean I was so excited when—well, freshman chemistry, what we did back then was what you call qualitative analysis and so you were really trying to learn how to do all these tests to figure out what metals were in particular compounds.  So it was just like a great puzzle and I thought it was wonderful.  I really did enjoy it.  Then when I learned about carbon chemistry, organic chemistry, it was just fascinating.  Physical chemistry to me was wonderful because it really explained fundamental principles of how the universe works.  So I have already been very intrigued with chemistry as a subject matter.
