Historical note

Established in 1908, the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) is a professional organization for animal scientists designed to help members provide effective leadership through research, extension, teaching and service for the dynamic and rapidly changing livestock and meat industries.

The mission of the organization is ‘to discover, disseminate and apply knowledge for sustainable use of animals for food and other human needs' and its objectives are: publish the monthly Journal of Animal Science as a means of disseminating scientific and educational information; promote research that discovers and expands knowledge in animal science and enhances the quality of animal products; foster high standards of education; promote the profession and vocation of animal science; be a resource for information on issues of public concern related to animals; and cooperate with other organizations that have similar goals.

ASAS is based in Savoy, Illinois and holds a yearly national meeting and four meetings in each of the regional sections: Midwestern, Northeastern, Western, and Southern.
