| The North American Farm Alliance (NAFA) was formed on April 9, 1983 in Des Moines, Iowa, at a farm coalition meeting organized by the US Farmers Association. Over fifty farm, labor and community organizations from the United States and Canada were part of the coalition. The group's goals were to gain parity prices for farm products, achieve fair trade and full employment for farmers, investigate the farm credit system, and end the forced farm liquidations of the farm crisis. The coalition also published a monthly collection of articles which addressed farm policy concerns to assist and inform coalition members, compiled from daily and weekly newspapers and over 700 business and trade periodicals from around the world. |
|
The collection (1982-1988, n.d.) contains newsletters, articles and other publications published by organizations often concerned with agricultural, rural, grass roots, labor and political issues. Most of the publications are by organizations in the United States, but publications of international organizations are also included. For additional North American Farm Alliance records, see also the Merle Hansen Papers (MS 595). Related collections also include the Farm Crisis Committee Records (MS 482), Rural America Records (MS 419), and collections of other organizations held by the Special Collections Department which were part of the North American Farm Alliance. For related collections, see also the National Farmers Organization (MS 481) and the Charles Walters Papers (MS 588). |

The collection is organized alphabetically. |
