Historical note
 

The American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to people interested in veterinary parasitology.  The AAVP was officially formed during the course of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) annual meeting of 1956.  During the meeting a constitution was adopted, Dr. L. E. Swanson (Department of Veterinary Science, University of Florida) was elected President, and Dr. D. E. “Don” Cooperider (School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia) was elected Secretary of the newly formed AAVP.

The AAVP meets each year in July concurrently with the annual meeting of the AVMA.  Since 1978, abstracts of the papers to be presented are submitted and published in the meeting proceedings.  The meetings consist of presentations on current research, updates and reviews, a President’s Symposium, and a session for practitioners jointly sponsored by AAVP and AVMA.

Full membership in the AAVP was originally limited to parasitologist veterinarians, but eventually non-veterinarian parasitologists were offered membership as well.  As of 1993, membership consisted primarily of scientists from academia, industry, government, and veterinary practitioners.  The AAVP recognizes outstanding achievement by awarding honorary and emeriti membership to deserving parasitologists.  Several awards are also distributed by the AAVP such as the Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist Award, the Graduate Student Research Award, and the Distinguished Service Award.  The organization publishes the AAVP Newsletter three times a year.

 

Collection description
 
This collection (1952-[ongoing]) documents the activities of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists.  The records consist of materials related to the annual meetings including correspondence, meeting minutes, and proceedings.  The records also contain copies of the AAVP constitution and bylaws, general correspondence between members, financial reports, membership listings, and newsletters.
