Historical note

The Ames Town and Gown Chamber Music Association was founded in 1949. Its first season of four concerts was presented in 1950-1951. Originally called the Ames Concert Association, the group was renamed the Town and Gown Celebrity Series in 1956. The current name was adopted in 1970.

The early goals of the Association, as stated in their 1963 Articles of Incorporation, were as follows: "to promote and manage presentations and productions of attractions of various kind and nature, including musical, operatic and dramatic performances, and intellectual and instructive entertainments, and other things related thereto which may be used for the expression of theatrical exhibition." Over time, the focus of the Association has shifted to chamber music. Their goal is to "increase the appreciation of this art form in Ames and its surroundings by providing the opportunity for patrons to hear chamber music groups live, with excellent acoustics, at a reasonable cost." The presentations sponsored by the Ames Town and Gown Chamber Music Association promote a genre of music that is not otherwise emphasized in the offerings available to the Ames community.

The Association's membership is open to any person interested in chamber music. It is run by a board of fifteen resident members and two Iowa State University students. The Board elects the officers of the group: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Archivist. The Association has six standing committees: Finance, Fund-Raising, Membership, Program and Hospitality, Publicity, and Talent. Each year, a regular schedule of four concerts is presented, with special concerts added on occasion.
