Historical note

People United for Rural Education (PURE) was a grassroots organization formed in April 1977 by Judy Greiner, Janet Kinney and Joyce Losure, to champion small schools. PURE was organized in Iowa and was a unique organization at the time of inception. The group's stated purpose was to "strive to protect and improve small schools through the adoption of positive, constructive, innovative measures to deliver educational services that will enhance the quality of life for rural citizens and yet preserve local community control. "

PURE was created in 1976 in reaction to the growing number of consolidations among rural school districts. A movement to oppose consolidation of schools began with Judy Greiner when a school administration promised to be more responsive to demands from an organized group. By 1977 Janet Kinney and Joyce Losure began to also champion the cause and in April of 1977 had a meeting with educators and homemakers. Thus PURE was born in January 1978 with 100 members.

Some of the activities of the organization included lobbying heavily, mostly to the Iowa State Legislature about educational issues, especially regarding consolidation of small schools and rural school systems. They also produced a regular newsletter developed to inform the public of the activities of not only their organization but also the activities of the Iowa government.

PURE ceased to exist by the late 1980s or early 1990s.

This collection contains papers collected from People United for Rural Education including: announcements, appointment books, audio cassettes, awards, bills, booklets, brochures, budgets, convention programs, correspondence, directories, expenses, finance committee reports, financial information, insurance information, meeting minutes, membership lists, news releases, newsletters, newspaper clippings, programs, proposals, receipts and surveys.

Among the correspondents are Janet Kinney, Joyce Losure, Kay Banwart, Jonathan Sher, James Jess, Roger Basheville, the National Rural Center, the Department of Public Instruction, Iowa Association of Educational Administrators, the Association Iowa Educational Administrators, Iowa Association of School Boards , the Area Education Agency, and Communicating for Agriculture.
