On October 12, 1934, a group of scientists representing the brewing and malting industries met in New York City to discuss and compare various methods of malt analysis. Organized as the Malt Analysis Standardization Committee, this group achieved great success in its endeavor and later appointed a subcommittee to deal with beer analysis. The American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC) grew from these two committees and on November 20, 1935, this permanent entity was incorporated in the State of Illinois. Currently, it is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The collection (1935 – [ongoing]) contains correspondence, including letters between the Executive Secretary and the Association’s officers as well as general correspondence; committee records such as those of the Constitution and By-laws Committee, the Editorial Committee, the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee, the Membership Committee, the Nominating Committee, the Technical Committee; records pertaining to planning conventions; reference files; and photographs.
