Historical note

The Ames International Orchestra Festival Association (AIOFA) was officially formed in 1971 as a public relations organization dedicated to bringing annual orchestral festivals to Iowa State University's C.Y. Stephens auditorium in Ames, Iowa.

The Association's purpose is threefold: to assist in the promotion of Festival events; to develop audiences throughout Iowa and the Midwest; and to be responsible for all hospitality programs for visiting orchestra members, conductors and guest artists.

The idea for an association began when a group of volunteers gathered to assist the New York Philharmonic Orchestra with their performance at the inauguration of C.Y. Stephens Auditorium in 1969. Iowa State University's Director of Concerts, Dr. Alvin Edgar worked with Ames residents and solidified the group into the AIOFA.

The AIOFA continues to assist with event publicity and coordinating hospitality for members of visiting orchestras. Much of the hospitality work is done by the group's Festival Guild, an auxiliary body to the Board of Directors.

Collection description

The collection (1969-[ongoing]) contains clippings, correspondence, Guild meeting minutes, news releases, publications, photographs, slides, Orchestra programs, invitations, organizational records, reports, scrapbooks, and annual meeting records documenting the history of the organization. Scrapbooks contain photographs, news clippings, news releases, programs, and invitations.
