Historical
note |
|
The Ames
Business and Professional Women's Club was founded on 9 November
1921 with 52 charter members. The Club was originally named Pi Gamma
Alpha (Business Women's Sisterhood), but the name was officially
changed in 1931-1932. The club disbanded in 1985.
The constitution
states that the purpose of the club was "to promote and protect the
interests of women in the industrial, business, and professional
world, to encourage greater effort in work, and to unite women in a
thinking Christian group for service." The club concentrated its
efforts on education, community projects, and legislation. |

Collection description
|
|
This
collection (1921-1988, n.d.) contains a constitution and by-laws,
articles of incorporation, notes, correspondence, newsletters,
newspaper clippings, annual reports, event programs, songs,
membership lists, manuals, scrapbooks, programs, photographs,
yearbooks, financial records, and minutes.
The records
document the activities, programs, and projects of the Club
throughout the twentieth century. In particular, the newsletters
provide information about the variety of club projects, which
included selling cookbooks for the hospital, sponsoring political
rallies and voting workshops, and educating its members about
international relations. There were also self-improvement workshops
for the members, focusing on book discussions, speechmaking, and
applying for jobs. The collection also includes information on
other Iowa clubs, the Iowa Federation of Business and Professional
Women’s Clubs, National Federation of Women’s and Professional
Women’s Clubs, and the International Federation of Business and
Professional Women. |
