Historical note

The Tilden Store began as Bigelow, Huntington and Tilden on 15 April 1869 in Ames, Iowa. That firm was dissolved in 1884, and George Tilden continued on alone. Primarily a clothing store, it remained in the Tilden family until it went out of business in 1971. In addition to remaining a family business for over a century, the store also remained at the same location on Main Street in downtown Ames throughout its existence.
