| The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) was established in 1882. The group's mission is to provide "a vision and voice through continuing education, publications, legislative and social activities to enhance the veterinary profession." IVMA's headquarters are located on Fleur Drive in Des Moines, Iowa. |

|
The
Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) donated to the Department of
Special Collections the files housed in the office of its Executive
Director, Dr. Fred D. Wertman. The
greater portion of the files includes general office correspondence and
general information, correspondence and minutes of the meetings of various
IVMA committees. Perhaps of
special interest amongst the committee files are the records of the Hog
Cholera Eradication Committee, which contain information concerning hog
cholera eradication and the committee's response to the proposed federal
regulation of the hog cholera eradication nationwide programs (a proposal
which would restrict the use of vaccines), during the years 1968-1969. Another
touchstone of interest is the correspondence and general information
concerning the participation of the IVMA delegates in the 1967
"People to People Tour" to Europe. Of
interest from an administrative and organization perspective, is the
critical letter circulated to the Executive Board members which questions
the function of the IVYIA as it relates to the American Veterinary Medical
Association (AVMA), and also questions the function of the IVMA Executive
Director. Executive Director
Fred Wertman makes an account of his activities and defends the functions
of the Executive Director in response (1971). |
