Historical note

 
The Iowa chapter of The Wildlife Society was organized in 1962 and is based in Ames, Iowa at Iowa State University.  The objectives of the chapter, as stated in the bylaws are:

to advance the science and art of wildlife management; to promote and maintain high professional standards; to improve public understanding and support of scientific management of wildlife and related resources; to recognize and commend outstanding work in the profession; to focus ... the objectives of the parent society on wildlife problems, issues and events on the local scene ...  

In order to carry out these objectives, members of the Iowa chapter hold workshops and conferences, undertake letter-writing campaigns to elected officials, and participate in lobbying efforts on behalf of environmental issues at the local, state, and federal levels. The chapter also established the Iowa Conservation Award of Merit "in recognition for outstanding contribution in the field of conservation in Iowa." The Award is restricted to living conservationists.  The Chapter also created the Iowa Conservation Hall of Fame which honors "national as well as local conservationists ... if they have been associated with Iowa at some time in their career." This award can be bestowed posthumously.  

Collection description

 
This collection contains materials related to administration of the Iowa chapter of the Wildlife society, as well as publications, events, political activities, and awards associated with environmental issues. The collection also includes materials from the National Wildlife Society, and the North Central Section of the Wildlife Society, which involves state chapters in Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio.  

Administrative materials include meeting minutes, by-laws, financial statements, newsletters, membership lists, and correspondence. Materials pertaining to events and activities include papers related to workshops and conferences hosted by the Iowa chapter, meetings held by other organizations, and national conferences. The collection also contains resolutions on variety of political issues, made by members of the Iowa chapter, as well as a significant amount of related correspondence with elected officials.

The collection is arranged alphabetically. When possible, materials from the North Central Section and the National Wildlife Society are indicated as such, all other materials pertain to the Iowa chapter of the Wildlife Society.
