Louis H. Pammel came to Iowa State in 1889 as Head of the Botany Department.   Active in both state and local affairs, he helped to draft the bill establishing the State Board of Conservation, and served as the Board's first President.  During his term of office, Iowa acquired 38 state parks.  Pammel State Park, near Winterset, commemorates his efforts to establish the state park system.

On campus, Pammel was much beloved as a teacher.  He chaired the Buildings and Grounds Committee and the College History Committee.  Much of the material relating to the University in the Department of Special Collections was gathered through his efforts.  Both Pammel Woods and Pammel Drive are named in his honor.
