Wilson (Republican) was elected to the Iowa legislature (1867-1871), then to approximately three terms (the last one was contested) in the U. S. House of Representatives (1873-1877; 1882-1885). In Congress he served on the Committee on Agriculture and the Rules Committee, and acquired the nickname "Tama Jim" to distinguish him from Senator James Falconer Wilson ("Jefferson Jim"), also from Iowa. The collection contains biographical material, correspondence, addresses, articles, transcripts and tapes of interviews with people who knew Tama Jim, scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, and genealogical material. Correspondence includes letters of recommendation, letters regarding appointments, and letters containing Wilson's opinions regarding professional matters.
