VETERINARY

American Veterinary Medical Association  News, features, veterinary resources. Animal health brochures for dog, cat, and horse owners. A few sections are restricted to AVMA members only.

Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services, USDA  News and information about APHIS, animal health and welfare, aquaculture, wildlife, pest control.

Animal Diseases  Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.  Links to hundreds of animal disease sites, both general and species-specific, including horses, cattle, swine, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, fish, etc.

Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges  Career and admissions information, enrollment statistics, links to all U.S. and Canadian veterinary colleges.

Consultant  Dr. Maurice E. White, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University.  A diagnostic support systems for veterinarians.  Database is searchable by diagnosis or by sign/symptom.  Records include literature and web site references.

FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine  CVM regulates the manufacture and distribution of food additives and drugs given to animals. This site includes drug information, a subject index, and the Green Book Online (FDA approved animal drug products).

Intute: Health and Life Sciences - Veterinary  Intute is a network of UK universities and partners whose subjects experts evaluate, describe, and organize Web resources for education and research. Search by title, description, or keywords, or browse by CAB subject headings.

Iowa Veterinary Medical Association  Information about IVMA, an online directory of Iowa veterinarians, calendar of events, classified ads, links to other veterinary Web resources, and a separate "members only" section.

ISU College of Veterinary Medicine  Information about the College, its programs, services, and staff.  Sections on academics, students, research, services, animal health, alumni.

Martindale’s “Virtual” Veterinary Center   A wide variety of web resources such as dictionaries and glossaries, veterinary curriculum materials, tutorials, databases.

Merck Veterinary Manual  A comprehensive electronic reference for animal care information.  Contains over 12,000 indexed topics; includes illustrations.

Office International des Epizooties (OIE)   World Organization for Animal Health.  Covers animal diseases worldwide.  Access to current edition of OIE’s Animal Health Code.  Links to national authority web sites for animal health.

Open Directory - Health: Animal  Veterinary and alternative medicine, breeding, diseases, products and services.  A brief description is provided for each source.

Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP) The web-based VIRMP is sponsored by the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians, and replaces the print version with the 2003-2004 edition. All program information will be available on this site.

Veterinary Medicine @ About  An informative site for pet professionals, pet owners, and students.

Veterinary Medicine Collections Guide  ISU Library Special Collections Department.  Descriptions of manuscript collections in the Special Collections Department, including those of professional veterinary organizations and unpublished personal papers.

ViFaVet  Library, School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany.  Annotated links to many worldwide Internet resources.  Resources are arranged by subject and by animal species.

AgNIC   A guide to quality agricultural information on the internet.  Resources selected by the National Agricultural Library, land-grant universities, and other institutions.

ISU College of Agriculture   The College’s departments, centers, institutes, and programs.  Links to many agriculture-related university, government, commercial, and non-profit organization sites.

United States Department of Agriculture  A gateway to the many agriculture, food and nutrition, marketing, education, outreach, research, and other resources of the USDA.

BIOMEDICAL

BiologyBrowser  BIOSIS.  Life sciences information resources, searchable by organism, subject, or geography.

Biomedical Information Resources   Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.  A large guide to web sites arranged by subjects such as molecular biology and genetics, pathology, neuroscience, evidence-based medicine, epidemiology, medical images, animals and plants, etc.  

HealthWeb   The Greater Midwest Region of the National Network Libraries of Medicine.  Member institutions have contributed over 60 subject areas including alternative medicine, immunology, neurology, nutrition, ophthalmology, public health, toxicology, and veterinary medicine.

INFOMINE: Scholarly Intenet Resource Collections   The Biological, Agricultural, and Medical Sciences section provides well-annotated links to a wide variety of quality resources in the applied and pure sciences.  INFOMINE offers several sophisticated search and browse options.

PETS AND ANIMALS

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals  The ASPCA's mission is to provide effective means to prevent animal cruelty throughout the U.S.  Site includes information on humane education and legal resources, pet care and nutrition, and dealing with animal cruelty.

Animal Welfare Information Center  National Agricultural Library, USDA.  AWIC furnishes information for improved animal care and use in research, teaching, and testing.  There are sections on lab, farm, zoo, and companion animals.

Healthypet.com   American Animal Hospital Association.  Furnishes a great deal of useful information on the care of dogs, cats, and other pets.

MedlinePlus: Animal Diseases and Your Health  Links to authoritative Web pages that provide overviews and information on specific conditions of birds, cats, dogs, horses, and other animals as they relate to human health.

MedlinePlus: Pets and Pet Health  Links to numerous authoritative Web pages of governmental organizations and professional associations concerned with pets and their treatment, diseases and disease prevention, nutrition, and other pet-related issues.       

PetEducation.com   Doctors Foster & Smith.  Hundreds of informative articles on:  dogs, puppies, cats, exotic small animals, holistic and alternative medicine, vet and lab procedures, other topics.  

Petfinder.com   Animal Planet Media Enterprises. Lists thousands of adoptable pets from over 10,000 animal shelters and rescue groups, searchable by type of animal, breed, age, size, gender, and geographic area. Includes articles from the ASPCA and other animal organizations on adoption, animal care, dog and cat behavior, poison prevention, etc.

PetPlace.com  Many up-to-date articles on behavior, illness and wellness of dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, horses, birds, and small mammals.  Articles written by PetPlace veterinarians and staff.  

ThePetCenter.com  The Internet Animal Hospital.  The site's mission is to furnish dog and cat owners with a better understanding of the medical and surgical treatment of pets.  Created by veterinarians, articles and photos deal with pet care, exams, surgery, pharmaceuticals, and other topics.

United States Animal Health Association  USAHA's mission is to protect animal and public health, with the prime objective of preventing, controlling and eliminating livestock diseases.  This site includes animal health news alerts, press releases, and links to organizations in the animal industry, state animal health offices, and other animal disease information sources.

VeterinaryPartner.com  Veterinary Information Network, Inc.  Hundreds of authoritative articles on dogs, cats, reptiles, and small mammals.  Articles deal with behavior, health, diseases, drugs, and other topics.

Vetinfo   TierCom, Inc., Michael Richards, DVM.  Presents a great deal of useful veterinary health information relating to dogs and cats.

Virtual Livestock Library   Department of Animal Science, Oklahoma State University.  Hundreds of e-resources for beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and horses.  Site can be searched by animal and specific breeds.

GENERAL REFERENCE

Internet Public Library  School of Information, University of Michigan.  Web resources arranged by subject and by ready reference materials such as almanacs, calendars, calculation and conversion tools, telephone and address listings, time and weather, etc.

Martindale’s “The Reference Desk”   Authored by Jim Martindale; hosted by Univ. of California, Irvine, Science Library.   A large quantity and variety of reference resources and teaching materials.  Emphasis on the sciences, including medicine and engineering.  

Refdesk.com  Bob Drudge, Webmaster.  A large site, excellent for finding quick facts and information and current news.  Well-organized; can be browsed or searched by subject categories.

Search Engine Watch   Danny Sullivan, Editor. Incisive Interactive Marketing LLC.  All major web search engines are listed and described, plus many specialized ones.  Site includes Web searching tips and tutorials, along with reviews and ratings for specific search engines.

VETERINARY DATABASES

CONSULTANT   Dr. Maurice E. White, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University.  A diagnostic support system for veterinarians.  Database is searchable by diagnosis or by sign/symptom.  Records include literature and web site references.  

Current Veterinary Journals   Jean-Paul Jette, University of Montreal.  Keyword search for citations to veterinary journal articles and conference proceedings papers, or browse tables of contents of proceedings and journal issues.  

EquineResearch.net  An equine medical research database of projects aimed at enhancing the safety, health, and soundness of various horse breeds.  Reported projects are funded by the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation and three other major organizations.

BIOMEDICAL DATABASES

CRISP   Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects.  Office of Extramural Research, National Institutes of Health.  A searchable database of federally funded biomedical research projects.  

NLM Gateway   U.S. National Library of Medicine.  A Web-based system that lets users search simultaneously in multiple NLM retrieval systems and databases, including MEDLINE/PubMed, MEDLINEplus (consumer health information), TOXLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov, Meeting Abstracts, and the NLM Catalog (books, serials, AVs). 

PubMed   U.S. National Library of Medicine.  For access to citations in MEDLINE, OLDMEDLINE, and additional life science journals back to the 1950's.  Links to full-text journals at websites of participating publishers.  Also provides access to molecular biology databases for nucleotides, proteins, genomes, structures, and more. 

TOXNET   Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program, National Library of Medicine.  A cluster of databases on toxicology data and literature (including TOXLINE) and hazardous chemicals.

AGRICULTURE DATABASES

AGRIS / CARIS   Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).  The AGRIS database contains about 3 million citations to journal articles, books, theses, reports, etc.  CARIS (Current Agricultural Research Information System) identifies research projects dealing with all aspects of agriculture.  

CRIS   Current Research Information System, USDA.  Ongoing and recently completed research summaries for projects sponsored by USDA, state agricultural experiment stations, state land-grant universities, and other institutions.

e-Answers  American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC). Contains thousands of documents prepared by Extension Service and Agricultural Experiment Station professionals at over 50 land grant universities in the U.S. Database is searchable by keyword.

NAL Catalog (AGRICOLA)  National Agricultural Library, USDA.  Search the Article Citation Database for citations to journal articles, book chapters, short reports, etc.

Poisonous Plants Informational Database  Animal Science Department, Cornell University. A searchable database of plants poisonous to animals. Records contain color images of the plants, their common and scientific names, animal species affected, primary poison, and other information. Includes links to several related sites.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY DATABASES

MarciveWeb DOCS Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. Citations for publications issued by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) from 1976 to present.

NTIS  National Technical Information Service, U.S. Department of Commerce.  NTIS is the largest central resource for government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business-related information.  Search this website for NTIS documents published since 1990.  Documents may be ordered directly from the website.  

ProQuest Digital Dissertations  The current two years of citations and abstracts in UMI dissertation Abstracts are freely available for searching, with full-text 24-page previews of the dissertations.

USPTO Patent Databases   US Patent and Trademark Office.  Covers U.S. patents issued since 1790, full-text patents since 1976, and patent applications.

Iowa Libraries Web Pages Directory  State Library of Iowa. Lists and links to the Internet addresses of Web home pages of Iowa libraries. Directory is arranged by library type (academic, public, school, special, etc.), then alphabetically by city.

ISU Library  Iowa State University Library online catalog.  Includes holdings of Parks Library, the Veterinary Medical Library, the Reading Rooms, and the Library Storage Building.

SILO Locator - Iowa's Card Catalog  State of Iowa Libraries Online, State Library of Iowa. Lists locations of Iowa libraries that hold a particular book or other resource. Searchable by title, title keyword, and author.

NATIONAL / INTERNATIONAL

British Library Integrated Catalogue  Search for books, serials, conference proceedings and other material held by the British Library.  Catalog can be searched in its entirety or by various subsets or subset combinations.

Library of Congress Online Catalog   Keyword searching and browse capability for finding  books and other materials held by the Library of Congress.  

Libweb   Thomas Dowling, OhioLINK. Lists and links to thousands of Web pages from libraries of all types in over 135 countries.  

Libdex   Bisca International Investments Ltd. A worldwide directory of library Home pages and Web-based OPACs. Search for libraries by name, country, or OPAC vendor.

WorldCat  OCLC Online Computer Center, Inc. Search the world's largest library network for holdings of its member libraries: books, documents, videos, and other items.

AG / MED / VET

Library Catalogs Home Page   National Library of Medicine. Search NLM's holdings through LOCATORplus, or identify and search national, federal, and medical research libraries and consumer health libraries.  

NAL Cataolog (AGRICOLA)   AGRICultural OnLine Access.  National Agricultural Library, USDA.  Search the NAL Catalog to identify books, serials, audiovisuals and other resources held by the National Agricultural Library and its cooperating libraries.  

Veterinary Medicine Libraries   Ken Ladd, University of Saskatchewan.  Major veterinary medical collections worldwide are listed, with links to library home pages or directions for accessing the library catalogs directly.

PUBLISHERS’ CATALOGS

Publishers’ Catalogues Home Page   Peter Scott; Northern Lights Internet Solutions.  Thousands of publishers of books and other materials can be searched alphabetically, by state or country, by topic, or by type of material.

The National Academies Press   National Academy of Sciences.  Read the full texts of more than 3,000 books online.  Includes the Nutrient Requirements series (beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, horses, poultry, dogs, cats, fish, etc.).  

BOOKFINDERS’ CATALOGS

Alibris  A comprehensive source of used, new, and hard-to-find titles.

Amazon.com Offers millions of popular and academic books, textbooks, reference books, etc. Many books have descriptions and reviews. Search by title, author, subject, publisher.

BookFinder.com  A book shopping search engine that scans thousands of bookseller collections to locate new, used, rare and out-of-print titles.

FULL-TEXT JOURNALS

FREE-ACCESS COLLECTIONS

Bioline International  A not-for-profit electronic publishing service managed by scientists and librarians and committed to providing access to quality research journals published in developing countries. Emphasis on biomedicine and agriculture.

BioMed Central  Publishes and provides free and open access to many research journals in biology and medicine. 

Directory of Open Access Journals  Lund University Libraries.  A collection of free, full-text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals, covering all subjects and languages.

Free Medical Journals.com   Flying Publisher. Full-text access to several hundred medical journals, arranged in major categories such as AIDS, epidemiology, infectious diseases, neurology, oncology, pharmacology, public health, etc. A few of the journals are not free until one month to two years after their publication.

J-Stage  Japan Science and Technology Information Aggregator, Electronic. Japan Science and Technology Agency. A large collection of Japanese full-text e-journals, most of which are free-access and in English.  There are also some free-text proceedings and reports.

HighWire Press   Stanford University Libraries.  Access to well over 400,000 free full-text articles, a large percentage from biomedical journals.  Articles from many of the journals are not freely accessible until 12 months following publication.

medIND    National Informatics Centre, New Delhi. A collection of peer-reviewed biomedical journals from India.

PLoS: Public Library of Science  A non-profit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. Its first journal, PLoS Biology, was followed by additional journals in medicine, computational biology, genetics, and pathogens and clinical trials.

PubMed Central   National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Institutes of Health. A free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. Journals that meet certain editorial standards are encouraged to deposit all their content in PubMed.
