Ada Hayden was the first woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy at Iowa State; she also became curator of the Herbarium, and added over 40,000 specimens to the collection.

The Iowa Agriculture College newspaper, "The Aurora" was published monthly by the students for the four literary societies on campus. It contains thoughts on culture, reading, and science, as well as notes on alumni, the campus, and student life.

Mary B. Welch developed and implemented the Department of Domestic Economy at Iowa State in 1875. The course combined elements of chemistry, botany, physiology, geology, and physics that applied to domestic economy.

Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station Research Bulletin (1911-1967) includes research reports in agricultural and biological sciences for scientists and practitioners.
Began in 1938, it was the first veterinary student publication in the country covering research of the Veterinary Research Institute and of the Veterinary School departments; it also included news on faculty, students and alumni.
Sketch is a literary journal edited and published by Iowa State University students incorporating juried artistic works, written or visual, by students. The journal began in 1934 and continues today. Currently includes issues from 1934 to 2007 (v.1-v.72).
