Celebrate Open Access Week Oct. 23-29, 2017.

“Open Access is the free, immediate, online availability of research articles, coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment.” - Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC)

Celebrate Open Access Week Oct. 23-29, 2017, with the Iowa State University Library, and attend a variety of events and workshops on campus.

The University Library will have an Open Access display in the Parks Lobby during the week.

Tues., Oct. 24
Workshop: Open Science Framework
The OSF is a free project management service and repository where researchers -- using their own tools and processes -- can collaborate within their research groups and choose components of their research for broader dissemination. Where and how can research be stored, organized and shared most effectively when there are so many different tools, processes, people and policies involved? This workshop will be a hands-on tour of the features of the OSF as participants create a reproducible project from start to finish.
10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Parks 134. RSVP on Learn@ISU

Open Educational Resources: Faculty and Students Weigh In This Panel Discussion is co-sponsored by ISU Library and CELT. Join us for a panel discussion on the impact of OER in the classroom. Faculty using Open Educational Resources (OER) in their courses share the benefits and challenges of making the switch to OER and students share their opinion on how OER could affect their learning. Participants will leave the workshop with plans for incorporating OER into their courses and a pathway to making their classes more affordable.

More on Open Access

There are several forms of open access:

  • Fully open access journals (i.e. all content is open access)
  • Hybrid open access journals (i.e. subscription publications that offer an open access option for an additional fee)
  • Open access repositories (like the Iowa State University Digital Repository)

At ISU, the Library assists scholars with promoting their work through the ISU Digital Repository. Faculty can send their CVs to digirep@iastate.edu and library staff will check publisher permissions and copyright clearance for publications.

There are numerous advantages to depositing scholarship into the ISU Digital Repository:

  • Greater visibility and impact
  • Scholarship available to a wider, global audience
  • Detailed readership statistics

For information about promoting work, visit the Library’s Guide to Open Access and the ISU Digital Repository.
