Letter from the Dean - spring 2026

As I approach retirement, I leave you with a challenge. Help others understand the meaningful impact of our work. Continue to be our advocates. Ask us the challenging questions about disruptive technology and the relevance of libraries.

Hilary Seo, Col. Gary G. Swenson Ph.D. Dean of Library Services

There are many preconceptions about library staff. Once you get to know us, you’ll find we’re more than great trivia partners.

Our team is passionate about and dedicated to our mission of providing world-class collections, services, and technologies. We hold fast to our values while providing equitable access to information and technology, affordable education, recognizing the dynamic needs of users, and adapting to meet those needs in our local and global communities. Due to the emergence of disruptive technologies like the internet, Google, smartphones, maker spaces, and now AI, some claim libraries won’t exist.

What is overlooked is libraries are so much more than access to information. With such a talented and knowledgeable team, I see continued excellence, relevance, and resilience. Our staff are imaginative and develop partnerships to enhance wellbeing, intellectual vitality, and culture. Our library is a third place that builds community, inspires dreamers, energizes productivity and collaboration, and advances innovation.

As 11th ISU President William Robert Parks shared at our building’s dedication in 1984, “The excellent library is the heart of the excellent university.” The heart of the library is the people who make it excellent.

As I approach retirement, I leave you with a challenge. Help others understand the meaningful impact of our work. Continue to be our advocates. Ask us the challenging questions about disruptive technology and the relevance of libraries. Listen to the meaningful stories of our students, faculty, and staff. Give our team a shoutout and a thank you. Sometimes we need a reminder the hard work we do makes a difference to society and future generations.

Even with all our accomplishments and challenges overcome, I will miss the people I encountered, worked with, and shared stories with the most. Who is going to listen to me brag about the library incessantly? Thank you for listening and championing our library staff and the amazing work they do.

It has been an honor working with such a caring community of librarians, staff, and donors. Opportunities abound. The library's future success is limitless with your support.
