Library is an MLK Day Celebration sponsor with keynote speaker George W. Trice

Ames/Story County community MLK Day Celebration

The Iowa State University Library is a sponsor of the annual Ames/Story County Community MLK Day Celebration, planned from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, at Ames City Hall, 520 Sixth St., Ames.

Keynote speaker George W. Trice will present “The Path,” a journey to do great things to keep the dream and legacy of Dr. King alive. Trice is a founder of the Trice Legacy Foundation, an organization that strives to honor the life and legacy of his cousin, John “Jack” Trice, through awarding scholarships and grants to Iowa students. Jack Trice was an Iowa State student-athlete who died from injuries suffered during a football game in 1923.

As part of the event, the winner of the fourth annual MLK Celebration Essay Contest will be announced. The Ames Human Relations Commission (AHRC) will recognize the recipient of the annual Humanitarian Award, an honor given to an Ames resident whose contributions to the community demonstrate extraordinary quality.

Gather at 6 p.m. for cookies and jazz in the Ames City Gymnasium. The program starts at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The event will be held virtually on Facebook and YouTube.
