Last month's Newsletter featured some titles in located the Library's Periodical Room. We continue this feature month with another list of titles:
College and University (LB2341.6 Am35b)
Published by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers this quarterly journal focuses on issues relevant to the association's purposes. A good source of current information about the multitude of issues in higher education, especially from the perspective of those working in admissions and registrar's offices.
The Economist (HG1 Ec74)
Since its inception in 1843, this British news weekly is hands-down the best English language news magazine that exists on this planet. Although it has a British slant (and a bit more conservative than either Time or Newsweek) The Economist is outstanding in its news coverage. Nearly every issue has a special multi-page section that treats a special topic in depth. If you were to consult only one news magazine each week to stay current with world events, this would be the one!
Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology (BR1 In8)
Published at the Union Theological Seminary, this quarterly journal produces thematic issues that treat a wide range of biblical and theological topics ranging from studies of Calvin to examinations of the Gospel of John. Although rigorous in its scholarship, it remains accessible to the general reader as well.
Restaurants & Institutions: Connecting with Consumers (TX901 In753x)
Begun in 1937, this brightly colored journal is an important source for learning more about all aspects of the foodservice and lodging industry. Its articles feature food trends, new products, recipes, menu concepts and merchandising ideas from the most successful restaurants and institutional foodservice operations around the US.
Tufts University Health & University Nutrition Letter (TX341 T83x)
Published for the past quarter century at Tufts University, this monthly newsletter summarizes recent research published about nutrition topics. Filled with a great deal of useful and reputable information, the Nutrition Letter is a great source for distilling down the often confusion health information that the popular media bombards us with everyday.
Bookmarks: For Everyone Who Hasn't Read Everything (Z1003 B718)
For the book lovers among us (and I'll bet there are quite a few on this campus!), this relatively new bi-monthly (it began publishing in 2002) provides a thorough guide for readers containing sections profiling classic authors, suggested reading, and a new books listing. The editors synthesize the contents of major book reviews found in newspapers, magazines and the Internet.
Journal of International Affairs (JX1 C723)
Affiliated with the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, the past half-century the Journal of International Affairs has produced a body of solid scholarship devoted to topics of global concern. Each issue focuses on a single topic (for example a recent issue dealt with Africa in the 21st Century), this publication represents some of the best minds writing on contemporary foreign affairs.
Modern Metals (TS550 M72)
Launched in 1945, this trade journal surveys the world of metalworking taking the reader through a metal's journey from the mill to the end user. Along the way, Modern Metals emphasizes the critical role that metal service centers play, as well as the fabricating and forming stages. This sum-of-all-parts approach to metalworking provides comprehensive industry coverage.
China Today (DS701 C6431)
Published monthly this glossy magazine portrays China in a positive light to the rest of the world. Articles treat a wide range of topics including geography, industry, and society. There is even a short section at the end that contains instruction in the Chinese language.
Utne Reader (AP2 U861)
For over twenty-five years readers have been entertained by the eclectic writings gathered every other month by the Utne Reader. Certainly left of center, this sprightly popular magazine will reward its readers by republishing timely and sometimes controversial essays from a wide range of authors. If you haven't taken a look at this one yet, please do!
Textile World (TS1300 T319)
As its title indicates, this monthly trade magazine covers the entire world of textiles, including yarn manufacturing, knitting, weaving, nonwovens, dyeing, chemical treatment, and fibers. For anyone interested in current trends in this fast-moving field, Textile World is the place to start.
Defense & Foreign Affairs Strategic Policy (U1 D411)
Sponsored by the International Strategic Studies Association, this slim publication provides useful information about both military and diplomatic issues that arise throughout the world. The text is a bit dense at times, but worth the time for those interested in contemporary assessments of international power relationships.
The Progressive (AP2 P943)
The grand-daddy of liberal politics, the Progressive is celebrating its centennial in 2009. A fixture of newsstands for decades, this publication is the place to go if you are interested in what the left is thinking about any and all topics--domestic and foreign. A recent issue discusses the Congo, Honduras, and contains an interview with Arianna Huffington.
