If you have come into Parks Library's Learning Connections Center (1st floor) recently, you may have noticed the construction work that has been going on since summer in the room which used to house microforms staff and collections. This is for the creation of a new state-of-the-art classroom that will be used for teaching Library Instruction (LIB160) and other information literacy classes by the library faculty and Instruction Department. The classroom was funded in large part by a grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. It will contain 48 student computers with shared instructor monitors at each station. It has been designed to function as an open computer lab when not being used for teaching. Since it is adjacent to the Help & Information Desk students using the computers will have access to assistance from the librarians, IT staff and students at that service point. It was originally hoped that the new classroom would be available before the beginning of the fall semester. The project was slowed down by the delayed delivery of custom raised flooring. The flooring was designed as a solution for the problem of installing extensive wiring and cables in an area with existing concrete floors. This eagerly anticipated room should be available for use sometime in October. |
