How do I see if the Library has a book when I know the title or author?
Go to the Library Catalog.
Select the Author or Title search from the pulldown list. By clicking on the down arrow, you can see all the search options available. (Only one of these options at a time is operational for a search.)
Enter your search term(s) in the blank box. Enter author names with the last name typed first.
Click on the "Go" button (or hit Enter).
Author and Title searches display results closest to the term(s) searched, allowing you to browse an alphabetical list.
Clicking on an entry produces the corresponding record or list of records, in “brief” form. The brief record includes only author, title, and publication date. Within each brief record click on the title to display the full record.

How do I see what books the Library has on a topic?
Go to the Library Catalog.
Select the General Keyword (the default option) or Subject search from the pulldown list. By clicking on the down arrow, you can see all the search options available. (Only one of these options at a time is operational for a search.)
You may find that selecting one of the other keyword searches (author keyword, title keyword, or subject keyword) will help you to narrow your keyword search.
Enter your search term(s) in the blank box.
Click on the "Go" button (or hit Enter).
How do I find where a book is once I have the call number?
In addition to the call number, you will need the Location and Collection information from the Library Catalog record.
"Location" refers to a building or unit in the ISU Library system, such as the Veterinary Medical Library and the reading rooms for Design, Economics/Sociology, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences. The Parks Library is also a location, as is Reserve & Media Services.
"Collection" refers to a body of material shelved or stored in a particular place. Parks Library's holdings are divided into a number of collections including the General Collection, the Periodical Room, the Reference Collection, the Microforms Center, and others.
Go first to the location and collection indicated, and then find the given call number within the collection.
The Parks Library General Collection is spread out throughout the Floors and Tiers of Parks Library. To find an item in the General Collection, click the link “Call #” in the catalog record, consult the green paper slips called “Guide to Parks Library General Collection,” or consult a call number map within Parks Library. The Floor or Tier needed will depend on the letter(s) at the beginning of the item's call number.
Where are the Tiers?
The seven Tier levels of Parks Library are located in the north central section of the building. They are not at the same height as the Floor levels or the Lower Level. The Tiers may be reached through stairwells and an elevator located north of the atrium stairway, along the central north-south corridor of the building. Parks Library maps
Delivery of library books to your home or office is a service offered only to people with an Iowa State University ISUCard or Iowa State University Library Visitor Card. To request items for delivery please use the Document Delivery form. For those people without an ISUCard or ISU Library Visitor Card, contact the interlibrary loan office at your local library. The staff there will need to request ISU Library materials on your behalf.
What if the Library doesn't own the book I want?
Books not owned by the ISU Library can usually be borrowed from a library elsewhere through the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service for holders of a current ISUCard or a current ISU Library Visitor Card. Requests can be placed in person or through the Interlibrary Loan online form. Interlibrary Loan information
The book I want is checked out until next May—what's going on?
Faculty, graduate students, honors students, and Professional and Scientific staff are given an extended loan, with items due on the last day of Spring Semester for the current academic year. If an item is checked out, you can place a recall for the item at the Circulation Desk. All library material is subject to recall after two weeks when needed by another patron. When the item you recalled has been returned, you will receive an availability notice. Please bring this notice with you when you come to retrieve the item.
