How do I..? -- Find Articles or Journals

How do I find a journal article on my topic? Finding articles is usually a two-step process:
  1. Use an index to identify the article.
    Go to the Indexes page.
Choose a broad subject area that includes your topic.
Select one of the indexes for this subject area.
    Do your search.
  2. If the full text of the article isn't online, go to the Library Catalog to see if the Library owns the magazine or journal.
Search for the title of the magazine or journal that contains your article.
Use the call number and location to find the magazine or journal in the library.
I need articles from a scholarly journal or a refereed journal, what do I do? Many indexes to articles do not indicate type of publication (scholarly, refereed, or popular). Tips on how to evaluate publications
How do I find out if the Library owns the journal I need? Go to the Library Catalog to see if the Library owns the magazine or journal.
Pick Serial Title and type in the title of the magazine or journal that contains your article.
Use the call number and location to find the magazine or journal in the library.
Where are the journals in the Library? The Library shelves journals and books in the same location based on subject call numbers. Once you know the call number of the journal, you will need the Location and Collection information from the Library Catalog record.
"Location" refers to a building or unit in the ISU Library system, such as the Veterinary Medical Library and the reading rooms for Design, Economics/Sociology, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences. The Parks Library is also a location, as is Reserve & Media Services.
"Collection" refers to a body of material shelved or stored in a particular place. Parks Library's holdings are divided into a number of collections including the General Collection, the Periodical Room, the Reference Collection, the Microforms Center, and others.
The Parks Library General Collection is spread out throughout the Floors and Tiers of Parks Library. To find an item in the General Collection, click the link “Call #” in the catalog record, consult the green paper slips called “Guide to Parks Library General Collection,” or consult a call number map within Parks Library. The Floor or Tier needed will depend on the letter(s) at the beginning of the item's call number.
Where are the Tiers? The seven Tier levels of Parks Library are located in the north central section of the building. They are not at the same height as the Floor levels or the Lower Level. The Tiers may be reached through stairwells and an elevator located north of the atrium stairway, along the central north-south corridor of the building. Parks Library maps

How do I get a journal that's at Vet Med? Vet Med Express
How do I get a library journal article delivered to me? Anyone may use the Iowa State University Library’s Document Delivery Service for receiving a copy of an article. Use the Document Delivery form to request articles.
What if the Library doesn't have the journal issues with the article I want? Journal articles not owned by the ISU Library can usually be obtained from a library elsewhere through the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service for holders of a current ISUCard or a current ISU Library Visitor Card. Requests can be placed in person or through the Interlibrary Loan online form. Interlibrary Loan information
