The Iowa State University Library is a member of the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA) consortium, Rapid, and a signatory to the Iowa Interlibrary Loan Reimbursement program.

Loans
Loan period: 8 weeks with no renewals.
There is a $12.00 loan fee for all libraries outside Iowa without a written reciprocal or consortia agreement.
International loans: $50.00 for libraries outside the U.S. and Canada. This fee includes commercial shipping one way. Return by commercial shipper required.
Standard delivery methods
Copies: Odyssey or Article Exchange. 1st class mail or fax if IP or email address not provided.
Loans: USPS Library Rate for all libraries without a reciprocal or consortia agreement.
Special handling
Billing and Payment
Invoiced requests - $3.00 surcharge
OCLC IFM, credit card (VISA, Mastercard, Discover), prepayment, and IFLA coupon will not be assessed the $3.00 surcharge.
International requests (i.e. outside the U.S. and Canada) require prepayment or credit card payment unless submitted via OCLC.
An invoice will accompany the material listing patron, ILL number and charges. First month statement will identify patron or ILL number. All subsequent monthly statements list outstanding charges, but provide no other information. Outstanding balances within 30 days of the monthly accounts receivable statement date are assessed a finance charge computed at a periodic rate of 1% per month on the balance computed from the statement date (annual percentage rate of 12%).
Additional information
International: Iowa State University Library returnables are loaned outside the U.S. and Canada for a $50.00 fee, including commercial shipping one way; return shipping by commercial shipper is required, paid by the borrower. Copies are sent internationally at the copy fees listed above, in addition to airmail surcharge and postage. IFLA coupon, OCLC IFM, credit card, and prepayment are preferred payment methods for materials sent internationally. International libraries on OCLC can be invoiced. Contact Lending staff for specifics.
Daily Procedure: OCLC requests are normally updated within 24 hours of receipt, sent via Odyssey within 48 hours of receipt, or shipped within 72 hours. Non-OCLC requests are generally processed and shipped within 1 week. Depending on method of shipment, please wait two weeks before requesting a status check.
Rush: Requests must have one of the following terms: Rush, Priority, Urgent, or a specific day and time needed. Such requests will be accepted with a lead time of at least two hours. Requests that need same day processing must be received by 12:00 noon Central time.
General loaning criteria
Books
All circulating books will be considered for loan.
Theses and dissertations
The circulating copy of theses and dissertations are loanable in the U.S. and Canada only.
Microforms
Microform material circulates within the U.S. and Canada with the following limitations:
- Reel limit of 10
- Serials microforms from the last 5 years are generally non-circulating
- Most ERIC documents will be copied; lengthy ERIC documents will be loaned
- Materials in active use are non-circulating
Periodicals
Requests for loan of a serial volume or issue will be considered with preference to consortia and reciprocal libraries. Loan period is a week or less. Commercial shipping is required both ways.
Newspapers
Microform only (see Microforms above)
Government Documents
- Government documents do circulate.
- We are a selective U.S. Depository: 1907-
- U.S. Serial Set is non-circulating.
- Census material is non-circulating.
Audio Visual Material
Audio visuals, such as music CD's, DVD's, etc. circulate selectively to Iowa Regents and GWLA libraries only.
