This course provides a survey of the historical developments in the African continent
from the eighteenth century to the present. The course covers the changes in indigenous
African cultures and states, colonialism, and issues facing independent Africa. Because of
the size and diversity of African cultures, we will not be able to discuss all regions in
the continent in equal depth. Throughout the course, we will be considering the sources on
which African history are based.
