College Guides and Rankings

Below are links to information about undergraduate and graduate college programs that are available via the Web. If you have questions after looking at these examples, you should consult the printed versions of these (if there are any) or consult with the Reference Desk librarians to obtain more information. The library also owns, in microfiche format, a complete collection of U.S. college and university catalogs and selected international catalogs, housed in the Media Center (Room 002, Lower Level).

College Source Online -- An information resource which provides cover-to-cover coverage of college catalogs of over 12,000 national and international institutions of higher education including 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities as well as selected Graduate Schools. Users can search for colleges by major, tuition, state, enrollment, degrees awarded, and affiliation. In addition, the site also features profiles of every accredited college in the United States along with links to college home pages; international college home pages; career information; and financial aid information.

College Rankings -- This site assembles without endorsement the myriad efforts to rank colleges and graduate programs. Includes a guide to print sources and a bibliography.

U.S. News Online's edu: Colleges & Careers Center -- The U.S. News & World Report's website provides application procedures, rankings, scholarship information, and guides for parents.

Peterson's College & Career Center -- Covers all levels of education including vocational, special and distance education.

The Princeton Review -- College, career and test information.

Saving for College -- Part of Money magazine's Money 101 online series of lessons, this lesson focuses on how parents can prepare for their children's educational expenses.

College Board Online -- Schedules for SAT's and other tests, college and some financial aid information.

Collegenet -- College and financial aid information.

CollegeView -- Offers a database of information on more than 4,000 colleges and provides multimedia tours of 300. Downloadable applications are available for 150 colleges.

Kaplan -- Features database of information, gathered by Kaplan Educational Centers, from surveys filled out by college officials on 1,200 colleges. Offers side-by-side comparisons of colleges. Provides an index to college Web pages, categorized under headings like "academic shrines" and "sports powerhouses."

Scholarship Search -- Free search for financial aid. Registration required.

FinAid -- Free access to comprehensive site which is updated daily and which links to other general and school specific resources. Registration required.

Sallie Mae -- This provider of loans to college students walks users through the financial aid process. Applications are available for downloading. No scholarship information.

Student Guide from the Dept. of Education -- Includes current information on how to determine financial aid eligibility, types and conditions of various government loans and Pell grants, and how to select the right school.

Title IV School Codes -- These Department of Education codes are needed when applying for federal student aid.
