Each Iowa library varies slightly in what they require you to provide on your first visit. Your ISU ID card will allow you to check out books from libraries at the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa. Ames Public Library, and other libraries that participate in the Open Access program will give a library card to any person in the state of Iowa who has a picture ID and printed evidence (such as a letter addressed to you) of their current Iowa address. If you look at the Open Access Annual Report, you can see a list of many college and public libraries around the state that participate. A card from one participating library will permit you to check out materials from any other participating library. In addition to the Ames Public Library, other nearby participants include: Des Moines Public Library, DMACC, and Grinnell.
The Center for Research Libraries welcomes researchers to visit their facility in Chicago. They prefer researchers contact them in advance for an appointment to view materials in their Reading Room. Their staff will ensure materials are on the shelf, and not loaned out to one of their member libraries, prior to setting up an appointment.
