Code/Statutes

Once a law is signed by the President, it is assigned a public law number and issued in print. At the end of each session of Congress, the laws are arranged in chronological order and printed in volumes called the Statutes at Large.  They are also incorporated into the United States Code which arranges laws by subject (Title).

Administrative Law

The Executive Branch is responsible for implementing laws that have been enacted.  Agencies issue regulations, guidelines, opinions to ensure that the intent of the law is implemented.  The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is a codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register.  The Federal Register is the official daily publication for Rules, Proposed Rules, and Notices of Federal agencies, as well as Executive Orders and other Presidential Documents.

Case Law

U.S. Supreme Court

Opinions of the Supreme Court of the United States are published officially in  books called the United States Reports.  In case of discrepancies between the print and electronic versions of a bench opinion, the print version controls. (more about the U.S. Supreme Court)

U.S. Courts of Appeals & Federal District Courts

There are 94 U.S. district courts and 13 judicial circuits, each with a court of appeals..  Opinions of the district courts are published in the Federal Supplement and  opinions of the U.S. Courts of Appeals are published officially in books called the Federal Reporter .   Web content varies by court. but most include opinions, calendar, rules, forms and statistics.
