Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) - formerly known as the Food and Consumer Service, administers the nutrition assistance programs of the USDA. The mission of FNS is to provide children and needy families better access to food and a more healthful diet through its food assistance programs and comprehensive nutrition education efforts.
Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) - responsible for ensuring that the nation's commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. Provides information and news on current food safety topics for consumers and resources for educators and health professionals. FSIS also provides detailed documentation of testing protocols, pathogen reduction, hazard analysis, and critical control point (HACCP) systems.
Nutrient Data Laboratory - produces and updates the National Nutrient Database, which is the most authoritative food composition database available on over 6,500 different foods. USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference is searchable by nutrient or keyword.
