Interlibrary Loan service via Worldcat
The Worldcat database offers a direct link to interlibrary loan (ILL) service. When you identify a specific item you would like to borrow -- such as a book -- an interlibrary loan request can be initiated by clicking the "ILL" button at the top of the page. The bibliographic information, including author, title, etc., will automatically transfer to a form. The next step is to provide personal information. When finished, simply click the "submit" button at the bottom of the form and the request will transfer to the ILL office.
If the ISU Library owns the requested material, it will say, "Firstsearch indicates your institution owns this item" and "Iowa State Univ" will be highlighted. Below that statement is a hyperlink that can be selected to search the Library’s catalog. This will provide more details about the item, including call number and location. If checked out, materials owned by the ISU Library can be requested on interlibrary loan. There are certain types of materials in Worldcat that are generally not eligible for ILL service. For this reason, some records will not have the ILL button displayed: Archival collections; serial collections; computer files.
Worldcat is not set up for requesting journal articles. Instead, use the Interlibrary Loan Request web form and select "Photocopy" at the bottom of the page.
Worldcat is a great way to request materials on interlibrary loan: it allows you to select the exact item you want to borrow, it helps the ILL office to be productive, and it will probably shave at least one day off the delivery time.
