These tutorials provide instruction for using library research databases
effectively. Access to many of these tutorials requires downloading the
Macromedia Flash plug-in. Further
instructions are available for downloading and installing the Flash plug-in.
Biosis Previews
Biosis Previews combines Biological Abstracts and Biological Abstracts/RRM
(Reviews, Reports, Meetings) into one unified database. It provides
comprehensive coverage of worldwide journal articles in the life sciences
from 1980 to the present. This website, from the publishers of Biosis/Biological
Abstracts provides opportunities to register for free online training
classes.
Biosis/Biological Abstracts
The ISU Library makes the Biosis Previews database available to its patrons
via the WebSPIRS search interface. This tutorial, from WebSPIRS publisher
Ovid, explains how to search Biological Abstracts/Biosis by keyword, title,
author, and subject; use features like the index and search history; and find
alternate terms in the thesaurus. Note: the link on the Ovid page
is still "Biological Abstracts."
CAB Abstracts
CAB Abstracts, produced by the Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences, provides
access to International journal articles in agriculture, plant protection,
forestry engineering, animal husbandry, animal and plant breeding, genetics,
veterinary medicine, nutrition, rural development, and economics. This tutorial
explains how to search CAB Abstracts by keyword, title, author, and subject; use
features like the index and search history; and find alternate terms in the
thesaurus.
EconLit
This tutorial explains how to search ECONLIT by keyword, title, author, and
subject; use features like the index and search history; and find alternate
terms in the thesaurus.
EiCompendex

terms in the thesaurus.
ScienceDirect
This "Demo" explains many features and functions of the ScienceDirect service.
For many index and abstract databases that the ISU Library subscribes to, a
ScienceDirect button at the bottom of a journal article citation will provide
full text access.
Web of Knowledge
The above link will connect you to a brief (ISI) Web of Knowledge tutorial
covering product access, cross-searching, results interpretation, and online
help.
WebSPIRS search interface
Many our library's databases use the WebSPIRS search interface. The above
link directs you to a page providing general information about this search
interface. Note: The WebSPIRS search interface was redesigned in
December, 2003, here is a helpful
comparison of the old interface and the new.
