Once you have signed up for the exam, you will be billed for it even if you not take the exam, or do not pass the exam.

Date and Time

The test-out exam will be given TWICE this session:

Wednesday, October 28 4:00pm Room 192 Sign-up deadline: October 28, by 1:00pm
Thursday, October 29 3:00pm Room 192 Sign-up deadline: October 28, by 1:00pm

Students wanting to take the test-out exam need to sign up by the deadline in Room 140 Parks Library, and fill out the Library 160 Test-Out Exam Application form.

It is a University policy that any test-out exam may be taken only once.

Eligibility

Any ISU student who has not yet taken the test-out may take the Library 160 Test-Out Exam, but it is strongly recommended that students considering the test-out meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • those who have scored high on the Library 160 Pretest (administered during the course opening lecture)
  • have junior, senior, or transfer student standing with significant experience / strong preparation working with a variety of academic research tools and information sources, as well as understanding of information retrieval and evaluation, and the scholarly research process

Students may be enrolled in Library 160 when they take the exam. If the student is enrolled in 160 and passes the exam, the student is responsible for dropping the course – it will not be dropped automatically. If you do not pass, you need to stay registered in the course and proceed with the course in the independent study format to earn a passing grade.

The Exam

The exam consists of 50 objective questions. A score of 40 is needed to pass the test-out exam. One hour will be allowed to take the exam. Exam items will cover course content focused on information access, retrieval, and evaluation. Students need to show their University ID (or driver’s license) to be admitted to the exam. Students should bring #2 pencils and eraser. Use of PDAs, cell phones, laptops, and other electrical devices is not allowed in the exam room. All devices must be turned off and stowed away before entering the exam room.

Grades for the exam will be available approximately 24 hours after the exam. If you pass, you receive .5 T credit for Library 160. If you do not pass, you will need to register to take Library 160.

Exam preparation

The best method for exam preparation is to review the online manual for the course, Library 160: Finding, Evaluating & Using Information. Students not enrolled in the course should inquire when signing up about the best way to prepare for the exam.

Questions about the exam may be directed to the Library 160 Office, Room 140 Parks Library. The phone number is 294-4527.
