LIBRARY 160: Finding, Evaluating & Using Information

COURSE SYLLABUS

Summer 2009 - June 15 – July 10 8

Purpose of Course:
The purpose of Library 160 is to introduce students to the use of academic research libraries, available library services, and electronic information resources, with an emphasis on information literacy and the research process. This course promotes student self-directed learning at ISU, and provides a foundation for life-long learning.

**SUMMER FORMAT **

Library 160 sections for Summer follow a 4 week format. Please follow the calendar in this syllabus for quiz due dates for your section.

Course Format & Content:
Library 160 is a self-paced, individualized course in which successful students take responsibility for their own learning. There are five required quizzes and one final exam. The following sequence is helpful for staying on track and completing the course.

  • Read the assigned chapter in WebCT.

  • Chapters include links to web-based tutorials; review these in WebCT.

  • Complete the chapter's quiz online. These quizzes are in WebCT under the “Assessments” link. Quizzes should reflect your work only. If you work with others, make sure to do your own work rather than getting or copying answers from others. See our Statement on Academic Honesty (below) for more information.

  • In WebCT, read course postings, keep track of your course progress, check your grade, check the calendar for quiz due dates, exam date, and contact your instructor with any questions.

  • Remember to check your quiz scores in WebCT. This helps you keep track of your total points and standing in the course. It also gives you the chance to ask questions about quiz points you may have missed.

Course Grading:
This course is graded on an S/F basis. Your final grade (S – Satisfactory or F - Fail) will be based on the results of five required quizzes and the final exam. Each of the five required quizzes is worth 10 points. Quizzes are available for a limited period of time, and must be submitted by the due dates listed in your WebCT calendar. Late quizzes will count for half credit only; late points cannot be made up. More information on quizzes is in WebCT. The final exam is worth 50 points; you must earn at least 30 points on the final exam in order to pass the course. You must earn at least 80 points (out of 100 possible points) to pass the course. Extra credit work may be possible for students needing additional points to pass; see your instructor for details.

WebCT:
All chapter readings, tutorials and required quizzes are included in WebCT. WebCT is also used for supplemental course content, communicating with your instructor, asking questions, and checking your grade and course progress. Information about using WebCT will be discussed at your opening lecture. If you have missed your opening lecture, contact your instructor or Library 160 Office staff in Room 140 Parks Library at once.

Statement on Academic Honesty:
All work and exams you complete for Library 160 must represent your own work. Submitting work done by someone else may result in getting zero credit on the work in question, or failing the entire course and being reported to the Dean of Students Office for academic dishonesty. See the ISU Student Handbook for any questions regarding plagiarism, misrepresentation, and all other forms of academic dishonesty.

Students with Disabilities:
If you have a documented disability that may affect your ability to participate fully in the course or if you require special accommodations, please contact Disability Resources Office, 1076 Student Services Bldg., 294-6624. Working with the Disability Resources Office is the University's approved procedure for receiving accommodations. Use of accommodations in the classroom or in testing situations will remain confidential.
