Purpose of Course:
The purpose of Library 160 is to introduce students to the use of academic research libraries, available library services, and electronic information resources, with an emphasis on information literacy and the research process. This course promotes student self-directed learning at ISU, and provides a foundation for life-long learning

Course Format & Content:
Library 160 is a self-paced, individualized course in which successful students take responsibility for their own learning. There are five required chapter readings, five required chapter quizzes, and one final exam. The following sequence is helpful for staying on track and completing the course.

  • Read the assigned chapter in WebCT. Chapters include links to web-based tutorials; review these in WebCT.
  • Complete the chapter's quiz online. These quizzes are in WebCT under the “Assessments” link. Quizzes should reflect your work only. If you work with others, make sure to do your own work rather than getting or copying answers from others. See our Statement on Academic Honesty (below) for more information.
  • In WebCT, read course postings, keep track of your course progress, check your grade, check the calendar for quiz due dates, exam date, and contact your instructor with any questions.
  • Remember to check your quiz scores in WebCT. This helps you keep track of your total points and standing in the course. It also gives you the chance to ask questions about quiz points you may have missed.

Statement on Academic Honesty:
All quizzes and the exam you complete for Library 160 must represent your own work. Submitting work done by someone else may result in getting zero credit on the work in question, or failing the entire course and being reported to the Dean of Students Office for academic dishonesty. See the ISU Student Handbook for any questions regarding plagiarism, misrepresentation, and all other forms of academic dishonesty.

Students with Disabilities:
If you have a disability that may affect your ability to participate fully in the course or if you require special accommodations, please contact Disability Resources Office, 1076 Student Services Bldg., 294-6624. Working with the Disability Resources Office is the University's approved procedure for receiving accommodations. Use of accommodations in the classroom or in testing situations will remain confidential.

WebCT:
The Manual and its required chapter readings, tutorials and required quizzes are included in WebCT. You must use the current online manual for readings and the current online quizzes. (Assignments from previous manual versions, facsimiles or copies of old quizzes will not be accepted.) WebCT is also used for supplemental course content, communicating with your instructor, asking questions, and checking your grade and course progress. Information about using WebCT will be discussed at your opening lecture. If you have missed your opening lecture, contact your instructor or Library 160 Office staff in Room 140 Parks Library at once.

Completing & Submitting Quizzes:
A sample quiz is online in WebCT to help you learn how to use the quiz tool. Be sure to review that sample before opening or attempting any of the required quizzes. Each required quiz has a deadline, listed on your WebCT calendar. We recommend that you submit your quiz well before its due date. After your score appears in your Library 160 WebCT grade book, if you would like to try to improve your score, you may re-do and re-submit the quiz a second time before its due date. Each quiz will allow you up to 2 attempts before its due date. Your best score will be applied to your grade book. Quizzes are due by midnight of their due date after which time they are temporarily locked and cannot be accessed again until the next business work day. After a due date has passed, no second attempt is available on that quiz.

  • Quizzes are timed. You will have a maximum of 2 hours to complete a required quiz once you have opened it. Opening a quiz, even just to look at it, starts the automated clock and subtracts from the time you have available to complete and submit the quiz.

  • Late quizzes will count for half credit only; late points cannot be made up. If you miss a quiz due date entirely (have not made any submission of that quiz), you may still complete the work, though the quiz will count for half credit only. In addition, only 1 attempt is possible on any late quiz. It’s very important to avoid accumulating late points in this class, as it makes it difficult to pass the course. Do your best to get all your quizzes submitted by their due dates.

Extenuating Circumstances:
If you have extenuating circumstances such as serious illness or family emergency that prevent you from submitting a quiz on time, you will need to provide formal documentation of this in a timely manner to the Library 160 Office, Rm 140 Parks Library. If you have a serious illness or extended emergency absence from classes, you may wish to ask your advisor to contact the Dean of Students Office as they can contact all your instructors for you. Late points may be forgiven only if your specific circumstance and formal documentation are verified and accepted by the Library 160 Office.

Course Grading:
This course is graded on an S/F basis. Your final grade (S – Satisfactory or F - Fail) will be based on the results of five required quizzes and the final exam. Each of the five required quizzes is worth 10 points. Quizzes are available for a limited period of time, and must be submitted by the due dates listed in your WebCT calendar. It’s very important to submit your quizzes on time! Late quizzes will count for half credit only; late points cannot be made up. The final exam is worth 50 points; you must pass the exam in order to pass the course. Minimum passing score on the exam is 30 points. In addition to passing the final exam, you must earn at least 75 points (out of 100 possible points) to pass the course.

Quizzes (5 @ 10 points each)            50 points

Final Exam                                       50 points (minimum passing score=30)

Total Possible Score                        100 points

Minimum Passing Score                  75 points
for course

After taking the Final Exam, your Final Grade will be calculated and posted in WebCT. If you have earned at least 75 points, you have passed the course and an "S" will be posted in WebCT as your Final Grade and on your ISU transcript. If you passed the final exam but have less than 75 points, you may have the option to correct your quizzes for additional points – see “Correcting Quizzes” below for more information. If you fail the class, an F will be posted in WebCT as your Final Grade, on your ISU transcript, and calculated into your ISU GPA. Students failing the Final Exam automatically fail the course.

Final Exam Information
The final exam is a paper exam and will be held in Room 31 Parks Library the week of February 22-26. Verify your section number (in WebCT, your class schedule, or confirm with your instructor or the Library 160 Office) to make sure you attend your section’s exam. You will not be allowed to test in any other section.

You must bring your ISU picture ID card and #2 pencils. Use of cell phones, PDAs, or electronic equipment is not allowed in the exam room. These items must be turned off and put away before entering the exam room. Final Grades will be posted in WebCT; more information about posting of grades will be given in class at exam time.

Correcting Quizzes
If you pass the Final Exam but still have earned less than 75 points total, you may have the opportunity to correct one or more of your quizzes in order to attempt to earn enough points for a passing grade. Contact your instructor or the Library 160 office staff immediately with any questions regarding this process.

Deadline for quiz corrections and all course work is Friday, March 5 at 4:00 pm.
