The Library's commitment to serve its diverse constituencies is evidenced in the following documents.

  • The Library's Core Values highlight the importance of user-centered services, including free and equitable access to information; the protection of users' privacy; the use of customer feedback to improve services and programs; information literacy instruction that is integrated with teaching, learning & research; physical facilities that are safe, comfortable, and conducive to study; and electronic services that provide convenient, remote access to library resources & services.
  • The Library's Mission Statement documents our goal to provide innovative services in ways that anticipate needs and respect the diversity of community and ideas.
  • The Library's Strategic Plan 2005-2010 speaks consistently to the needs of our users, and documents the Library's commitment to "collaborate with ISU students, faculty, and staff to ensure that students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to function independently and successfully in an information-driven world." The plan similarly documents our commitment to "strengthen outreach and extension efforts through access to library materials, services, and information systems; through provision of non-credit courses and workshops to meet the life-long learning needs of Iowans; and through national and international leadership in information-sharing."
  • Numerous Library policies, publicly available on the e-Library website, attest to the Library's commitment to serve its constituencies effectively, efficiently, and with fairness. These include policies governing access privileges, user privacy, noise in the library, and computer use.

The Library's capacity to serve these diverse constituencies is reflected in:

  • Careful stewardship of the Library's fiscal resources, including development efforts through the ISU Foundation. (Fiscal year 2005 was a record-breaking year for the University Library in terms of private support, with 3,445 donors and $1,498,797 secured.)
  • Conscientious management and development of the Library's human resources (faculty, professional and scientific staff, classified staff, and student employees)
  • Careful and systematic licensing of electronic resources, to allow for:
    • Inclusion of on-site access for all users, regardless of ISU affiliation
    • Inclusion of specific constituencies that might otherwise be excluded by vendors, such as employees of federal labs on campus
    • Remote access for specified user groups
    • Interlibrary loan (ILL) use
    • Course reserve use
  • Careful planning and management of liaison relationships between subject librarians (responsible for collection development, reference, and instruction in their areas of expertise) and designated faculty liaisons in each academic department or program
  • Information Technology (IT) policies, procedures, and infrastructure that support broad, multi-level access to library resources, both within and outside library facilities, based on user group and access privileges
  • Careful management of access privileges for each constituency, through creation and maintenance of a comprehensive user database
  • Collaboration with the ISUCard Office in associating library privileges with the ISUCard or the ISU Library Visitor Card
  • Collaboration with the University's Continuing Education and Communication Services (CECS) to ensure library services for off-campus students
  • Collaboration of library staff on standing committees and task forces dealing with specific user groups. Within the Library, committees include the Committee on Diversity, the Public Relations Committee, and the Distance Education Task Force. At the university level, committees include the Associate Deans for Undergraduate Programs, the Council for International Programs, the Faculty Senate, the University Committee on Disabilities, and the University Committee on Women.
  • Collaboration with other university offices in meeting the needs of specific constituencies, e.g., Alumni Association, Student Affairs, Faculty Senate, Disability Services, etc.
  • Provision of value-added, fee-based library services on a cost-recovery basis, e.g.,
    • Document delivery
    • Special Collections research and image reproduction services
  • Maintenance of multiple channels for communication with various constituencies, including:
    • e-Library current news & news archive
    • E-Library web pages targeting specific audiences, including remote users and users with disabilities
    • "Contact us" links on all e-Library web pages
    • InForm newsletter (published twice monthly and distributed to all library staff and selected retirees)
    • Your Library newsletter (published eight times a year, and distributed electronically to all ISU faculty and staff. Future plans include distribution to university students as well).
    • Bookmarks newsletter (published twice yearly and distributed to over 3,400 ISU Library donors and friends)
    • Announcements and articles contributed to Inside Iowa State, Inside Update, and the ISU Daily
