Description: An academic library is defined in terms of its collections and the services provided to make information available to the user community. The collection management function at the ISU Library creates, maintains and evaluates a body of information in varied formats, including information that is remotely accessed and may not be owned by the ISU Library.

Those who practice collection management are responsible for the full life-cycle of information, from its point of selection to its possible withdrawal. Subject librarians are in regular contact with members of the ISU community, especially faculty, graduate students and research staff. These interactions allow collection management staff to track and act upon the development and obsolescence of disciplines, to understand the interdisciplinary nature of scholarship at ISU and to examine the balance of ownership and access. Because of the on-going relationship with those who conduct research and advanced instruction, the collection management practitioners are well-positioned to provide research-level information services to their clientele. Collection management is the primary responsibility of the Collections Coordinator, and is a responsibility of the Heads of the Subject Departments as well as of the subject librarians who handle particular subject areas. Please feel free to contact subject librarians or your faculty liaison with questions and recommendations.

This department is part of the ISU Library's Collections & Technical Services Division.
