Minoru Amemiya
was born March 17, 1922 in San Francisco, California.
During World War II, he was detained in a Japanese
internment camp in Utah. He joined the United States Army and worked for Army
Intelligence (1944-1947).
Dr. Amemiya
received a B.S. (1942) in plant science from the University of
California at Berkeley and an M.S. (1948) and a Ph.D. (1950) in
soil physics at Ohio State University.
He worked as a
soil scientist with the USDA and Associate Agronomist (1950-1958) with the
Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station, and a
Research Soil Scientist (1958-1960) with the USDA in Texas and Ames, Iowa. Dr.
Amemiya was appointed Associate Professor (1965-1968) in Agronomy at Iowa
State University . He was soon promoted to Extension
Agronomist and Professor of Agronomy (1968-1988) at Iowa State University. Dr. Amemiya retired from Iowa State University in
1988.
His primary
research interests included soil physics and soil management.
Dr. Amemiya wrote numerous articles on these subjects, many
of the articles intended for practicing farmers.
He was also interested in conservation, particularly soil
conservation and conservation education.
During his
career, Dr. Amemiya was a member of the American
Society of Agronomy, the Soil
Science Society of America, and the Soil Conservation
Society of America.
He was also on
the Executive Committee of Iowa Conservation Education Council and
developed conservation education workshops for this group.
Dr. Amemyia
passed away November 2, 2000.
Minoru
Amemiya married Grace Obata on September 6, 1947 in Cleveland,
Ohio. Grace attended
the University of California School of Nursing and St. Mary’s
School of Nursing (Rochester, Minnesota).
Grace and Minoru have two sons, Michael and Robert.
