Biographical / Historical note

 
Wesley F. Buchele (1920-  ) was born on March 18, 1920 in Cedar Vale, Kansas.  He received a B.S. (1943) in Agricultural Engineering from Kansas State University.   He received a M.S. (1951) in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Arkansas.  He received a Ph.D. (1954) in Agricultural Engineering and Soil Physics from Iowa State College (later, University).

He was a member of the U. S. Army Artillery and Infantry (1943-1946) and was stationed in the Pacific.  He was a junior engineer at the John Deere Waterloo Works (1946-1948), then returned to academia when he became an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas (1948-1951).  He was a Graduate Assistant at Iowa State College (1951-1954).  He was an Assistant Professor at Iowa State College (1954-1956), an Associate Professor at Michigan State University (1956-1963) and a Full Professor at Iowa State University (1963-1989).  Buchele retired from Iowa State University on June 30, 1989.  He taught in the capacity of Visiting Professor at the University of Ghana (1968-1969).

Dr. Buchele was a member of many prominent national and state organizations including the Society of Automotive Engineers, the International Society on Terrain-Vehicle Systems and the National Institute of Agricultural Engineers in England.

Dr. Buchele was granted numerous patents by the U. S. government, the most well known being the patent for a "machine for Forming and Handling Large Round Bales of a Fibrous Material."  He originated many courses at Iowa State including courses on Agricultural Safety, the first courses of this kind taught in the United States.

 

Collection Description

This collection contains seven series: Series 1 – Correspondence, 1951-1989, contains letters sent and received by Buchele concerning public, private, business and personal affairs.  Series 2 – Films, 1949-1980, includes films on agricultural subjects, including 16mm films of various lengths, audio reel-to-reel tapes, 1 inch and ½ inch videotape and Super-8 Magi-Cartridges.  Series 3 – Professional Activities, 1938-1984, contains notebooks, brochures and papers that Buchele worked with in the professional sphere.  Series 4 – Papers, 1932-1990, contains papers that Buchele—by himself or with a colleague—wrote for presentation or publication; the series also includes theses written by students under him.  Series 5 – Patents, 1935–1983, contains patent disclosures and vitas applied for and granted to Buchele.  It also includes patents granted to people Buchele worked with and patents used for his own research.  Series 6 – Class Materials, 1959-1984, includes materials used by Buchele in the classroom.  Series 7 – Biographical Information, 1969, includes personal data sheets and faculty vitae filled out by Buchele while working at ISU.

Organization

This collection is organized into seven series: Series 1 – Correspondence, 1951-1989; Series 2 – Films, 1949-1980; Series 3 – Professional Activities, 1938-1984; Series 4 – Papers, 1932-1990; Series 5 – Patents, 1935–1983; Series 6 – Class Materials, 1959-1984; and Series 7 – Biographical Information, 1969.    Series 1 is arranged in alphabetical order.  Series 2, 3, 4 and 5 are arranged by Buchele.  Series 6 is arranged by class number.  Series 7 is arranged chronologically.
