Historical note

Iowa State University’s Research and Demonstration Farms are administered by the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station of the ISU College of Agriculture.  The farms are located across the state in order to engage in specific regional research needs.  Most of the research farms are leased by the Experiment Station from local nonprofit associations of farmers and business people.  The other farms are owned by the state and ISU affiliate organizations.

The Experiment Station works closely with area farmers to address local research needs.  Area producers make up the membership of local advisory committees, which meet with county area extension staff and ISU researchers to suggest problems that need to be studied.  The committee members also act as liaisons between the university and other producers.

Research performed at the farms is published by the Experiment Station in annual reports.  Farmers are able to view experiments in person during field and demonstration days hosted by the farms.

Collection description

This collection (1931-[ongoing]) contains material documenting the activities of Iowa State University’s Research and Demonstration Farms.  The records include annual reports, newspaper clippings, informational publications, and photo scrapbooks.  The contents of the photo scrapbooks are of specific interest as they document farming practices being researched in the 1930s.  The scrapbooks contain photos of gully and erosion control practices, crops, scientific equipment, and machinery operations for harvesting, seeding, terracing, and tillage.  Additional annual progress reports for the various research centers are also available in the University Archives                   (S61 M331111 – S61 W47112x).
