Biographical note


Professor John Gowan was born September 5, 1893 in Evinston, Florida.  He received his B.S. and M.S. from University of Maine in 1914 and 1915 respectively, and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1917.  Gowan was a biologist at Maine Agricultural Experimental Station from 1917-1926 and at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research from 1926-37.  He came to Iowa State as Professor of Genetics in 1937 and became Head of the Department in 1948.  In 1964 Gowan retired from Iowa State to serve as a professor of radiation biology and genetics at Colorado State from 1964 until his death.  He was a member of the Biometric Society, American Genetic Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, American Association for the advancement of science, and American Naturalists and served as the President of the Genetics Society of America in 1952 and Vice President of American Society of Zoologists in 1950.  Gowan was also a member of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa.  Professor John Gowan died in September 1967 in his laboratory at Colorado State University.

  

 

Collection description

 

This collection contains biographical information, a bibliography of Gowans writings, and materials on graduate genetics courses dealing with irradiation, serological genetics, human inheritance, and sex ratios and sex determination (1920s-1940s). Reference materials are also included, documenting silkworms, gene crossing, radiobiology, bird and animal antigens, and mutation rates in bacteria (1920s-1940s).
