Biographical

Dr. Lindstrom was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 5, 1891. He attended the University of Wisconsin where he received a bachelors degree in 1914. He completed his doctorate degree in 1917 at Cornell University. From 1917-1919 he served as a Lieutenant in the Air Force in the 96th Bombardment Squadron. In 1919 he accepted a position as assistant professor of genetics at the University of Wisconsin. In the fall of 1922 he came to Iowa State College to establish a new Genetics Department. He was the head of the department for 26 years. In 1937 he became Vice Dean of the Graduate school. From 1944-45 he served as a visiting professor at the National University of Medellin, Columbia, South America, where he established a new Genetics Department . Dr. Lindstrom's research interests included inheritance, linkage relations, maize and tomato genetics. Dr. Lindstrom was a charter member of the Genetics Society of America and served the Society as Secretary-Treasurer 1938-40, Vice-President in 1941, and President in 1942. He was a member of the American Society of Naturalists, Botanical Society of America, American Genetic Association, Iowa Academy of Science, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Lindstrom married A. Cornelia Anderson in August 1921 at Madison, Wisconsin. They had three children, Eugene, Cornelia, and Rosemary. He died November 8, 1948, at the College Hospital in Ames, Iowa, and is buried in Madison, Wisconsin. |

Lindstrom collection contains biographical information, general correspondence (1940-47), correspondence regarding a maize (corn) museum (1943-44), research notebooks (n.d., 1921-25), corn embryo longevity research data and summaries (1941-46), and published as well as unpublished writings (1917-1936). |
