Historical note

Poultry science was first offered at Iowa State in 1907 as a section in the Animal Husbandry Department.  Howard C. Pierce taught the first poultry course, “Poultry Research and Experimentation.”  In 1946 the section became the Department of Poultry Husbandry, and in 1961 the Department of Poultry Husbandry was renamed the Department of Poultry Science.  The Department of Animal Husbandry was renamed the Department of Animal Science in 1971.  In 1973 the Department of Poultry Science was discontinued and its courses were offered under the Department of Animal Science.
