Historical note

The Office of Biotechnology was established in 1984 at Iowa State University.  The university-wide program is the responsibility of the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Advanced Studies.  In 1984, the office established the Biotechnology Council whose mission is to develop an effective program of research, education, and outreach related to the application of molecular biology to the development of useful products and processes.  The Biotechnology Council, which is responsible to the Vice Provost for Research and Advanced Studies, consists of faculty members with active research programs in biotechnology disciplines from the Colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, Family and Consumer Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.  The Council makes recommendations to the Vice Provost for Research and Advanced Studies on how funds available from the State of Iowa and other sources could be used to obtain maximum benefit for biotechnology education.  The Office of Biotechnology oversees the operation of biotechnology programs developed by the Biotechnology Council and the Vice Provost for Research and Advanced Studies.

Iowa State University has three goals for its biotechnology research:  increasing the value of current agricultural raw materials through bioprocessing techniques; increasing the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of plant and animal production; and genetic modification of plants, animals, and microbes to produce more diverse products of greater economic value.

The Office of Biotechnology has close working relationships with the Iowa State University Research Foundation, the Iowa State University Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer, the Research Park Corporation, the Iowa Biotechnology Association, the Iowa Department of Economic Development, the Ames Chamber of Commerce, and the Des Moines Chamber of Commerce.
